Science Methods II - Week 2

Big Question:

In discussion we continued to talk about the big question of “How can we support play that is exciting but not dangerous?” We first worked in a group to use our tools from last week and create a list of items to use for a chosen grade to use to learn motion. We chose grade 5 and created our list. Then, we worked in groups to create a test for finding the effects on speed caused by the height and slope of the slide. We found that the higher the slope or steepness of the ramp, the faster the ball moved.

Thursday’s Lecture:

In lecture we began by talking about why the speed of a tall slide is higher than that of a shorter slide, we concluded that the more time on the higher slide causes more speed to be gained resulting in a higher speed gained. We then drew what we thought this would look like on a graph and discussed what it would actually look like. We then discussed force and why we speed up as we continue falling. We talked about how forces can cancel, like when objects stay still under gravity.

Textbook Reading:

From the textbook I learned more about Inertia and how objects in motion will stay moving and objects at rest will stay at rest unless they are acted upon by an outside force. I also learned about Newton’s second and third laws, being The greater an object’s mass, the more force it takes to accelerate it, and If object A pushes on Object B, then object B pushes the same force back on Object A. The third law leaves me with a question. If two objects push back at each other with the same force, how do objects move? Shouldn’t one force have to be greater?
